Pride and Prejudice

by Jane Austen

Plot Summary

The elusive and changing nature of love is the theme of Austen's 1813 Pride and Prejudice. It features the story of two couples, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Jane Bennet and Charles Bingley.

The romance and chemistry between Jane and Bingley is quick and obvious to the reader, but not to all the characters in the story. Elizabeth and Darcy are unimpressed with their first impressions of each other. Misconceptions develop, and pride and prejudice impede their romance, while the couples' relatives provide other difficult obstacles to a happy ending.
